Trump Reviewing 3000 Pardons, Including Muhammad Ali But Not O.J. Simpson

Rita Gibson | 08 June, 2018, 20:19

President Donald Trump said Friday he is considering posthumously pardoning boxer Muhammad Ali, who was convicted in the 1960s after refusing military service in Vietnam.

Ali, who passed away in 2016, is among "thousands of names" Donald Trump says he is considering for clemency.

"My conscience won't let me go shoot my brother, or some darker people, or some poor hungry people in the mud for big powerful America", Ali said at the time. "There is no conviction from which a pardon is needed". His decision resulted in a draft-evasion conviction, and he was stripped of his heavyweight boxing crown. The Supreme Court would overturn his conviction in 1971. Ali's lawyer confirmed in a statement that the boxing legend has no use for a pardon.

Although Ali's conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court in 1971, it had a massive impact on his boxing career, as he didn't fight for more than three years, from March 1967 until October 1970, as no state would license him to box. "The power to pardon is a handsome thing".

He did not offer any other names, but said in response to a reporter's question that O.J. Simpson wasn't on the list.

Last week, almost a decade after complaining about the casting of Khloe Kardashian on his Celebrity Apprentice reality TV series instead of her "hot" sister, Kim visited the White House to make the case for pardoning grandmother Alice Johnson, who was serving a life sentence on drug offenses. "Many of those names have been treated unfairly". In March, he pardoned a U.S. Navy sailor who served a year in federal prison after taking photos of classified portions of a submarine.

For Trump, Kardashian's support of Johnson was key, given the President's penchant for considering the pardoning of celebrities like Martha Stewart and former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, also a former TV personality.

Trump said Friday that he is considering 3,000 people for pardons.
