Trump to skip G7 climate sessions following spat with Macron, Trudeau

The meeting on Friday and Saturday in Charlevoix, Quebec, will be the first chance G7 leaders have had to confront Trump in person since US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union were imposed last week.

At the summit in Charlevoix, Quebec, Trump will hold bilateral meetings with Macron and Trudeau, in addition to attending working sessions with all of the G-7 leaders.

Leaders of the Group of Seven rich nations headed for a summit in Canada more divided than at any time in the group's 42-year history, as US President Donald Trump's "America First" policies risk causing a global trade war and deep diplomatic schisms.

Indeed, on Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron suggested in a tweet that Trump might not sign the final summit statement on G-7 priorities.

"We've not had an American president or administration like this in the post-war period, " said Colin Robertson, a former Canadian diplomat.

But Mr Trump showed no sign of backing down on Thursday, first taking to Twitter to accuse both France and Canada of imposing massive tariffs on USA goods and then accusing Trudeau of "being so indignant".

"Looking forward to straightening out unfair Trade Deals with the G-7 countries", Trump tweeted early Friday.

But they expressed support for the US president's historic meeting in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, scheduled to take place early next week. "It will start to hurt American workers, the cost of raw materials will rise and industry will become less competitive".

Officials said the speed and ferocity of the eruption took mountain communities by surprise, with numerous dead found in or around their homes.

"A trade war doesn't spare anyone", Macron said.

Most recently, Trump pulled the US out of the Iran nuclear agreement, following his earlier decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord.

"Prime Minister Trudeau is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things.but he doesn't bring up the fact that they charge us up to 300 percent on dairy - hurting our Farmers, killing our Agriculture!" "They should let Russian Federation come back in because we should have Russian Federation at the negotiating table", Trump noted.

European Union and Canadian leaders also appeared ready to unite against Trump at the upcoming G7 summit.

Last week the USA announced it was ending an exemption on steel and aluminum tariffs that initially had been granted to Canada, Mexico and the EU. "I believe it can be worked out", top White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow told reporters on Wednesday. "So I don't think there's any issue there at all".

Trump withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action initially signed between Iran and a group that included China, Russia, France, Germany, the U.K. and the United States.

Robert Bothwell, a professor at the University of Toronto, said Trump's actions appear meant to break Canada at the negotiating table.

According to CNN, the comments came during a call between Trump and Trudeau discussing U.S.
