Recalling that he and Prime Minister Modi successfully had an informal meeting and reached important consensus in Wuhan, President Xi said the meeting had been well received by both countries and the worldwide community, and a positive atmosphere is taking shape to pay close attention to and support the development of China-India relations.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping signed the agreement as they began the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. They also agreed - as decided during their first informal summit at Wuhan in April - to maintain strategic communications through various channels, including telephone calls and frequent meetings on the sidelines of multilateral events.

After their talks in Wuhan, Mr. Modi and Mr. Xi had chose to issue "strategic guidance" to their militaries to strengthen communications to build trust and understanding as part of efforts to avoid a Doklam-like situation in the future.

Modi and Xi were also expected to discuss economic relations between the two countries, NDTV reported.

India said past year that China had not stuck to an agreement to share hydrological data, or scientific information on the movement, distribution and quality of water for the Brahmaputra river.

Luo said it was the 14th meeting between our two leaders over past four years.

Troops of India and China were locked in the 73-day standoff in Doklam since June 16 a year ago after the Indian side stopped the construction of a road by the Chinese Army in the disputed area.

After the deliberations, the member-countries, including Russia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, are expected to sign the Qingdao Declaration that will contain details for creating significant mechanisms to resist terror activities around the globe.

China's Belt and Road Initiative was also strongly opposed by India as part of it goes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

However, there have been concerted efforts by both sides to reset ties leaving behind the Doklam episode.

"Despite competitive prices, India was unable to export rice to China due to their phytosanitary norms", said a New Delhi based dealer with a global trading firm, referring to food standards as well as animal and plant hygiene.

Gokhale said Xi referred to the growing popularity of Indian films and not only spoke about the success of the movie Dangal in China, but also mentioned that Baahubali 2 and other Hindi movies had done well in the country.

The prime minister's comments at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore were appreciated by China.

The SCO now has eight member countries which represents around 42 per cent of the world's population and 20 per cent of the global GDP.

The latter's meeting is supposed to focus on cooperation in various areas and prospects for the development of an economic corridor connecting the three countries.

Though not officially on the agenda, analysts say that one key topic of discussion this year may focus on whether Iran will be allowed to ascend from its position as an SCO observer to become a full member state - a development it has sought since 2008 but has been unable to achieve while subject to United Nations sanctions.
