The extent to which USA troops are assisting behind the scenes or fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with local troops has become a point of contention, not only in Somalia but also in other parts of the world where US forces are helping fight extremist groups by backing proxy forces.

A U.S. special forces soldier has been killed in an attack by suspected al-Shabab militants in south-western Somalia, officials say. The injured service members were medevaced to Djibouti, where US Africa Command (AFRICOM) maintains its Camp Lemonnier base.

In Somalia, U.S. forces working alongside Somali National Security Forces and Kenyan Defense Forces came under attack from mortar and small arms fire at about 2:45 p.m. local time, Africom said.
