Facebook shared user data with select companies

Facebook let select companies have “special access” to user data, per report Report: Facebook’s shared user data with select companies

Before the changes were implemented, app developers such as Cambridge University researcher Aleksandr Kogan were able to collect information on up to 87 million Facebook users because they were friends of about 270,000 users who used Kogan's quiz app and agreed to share their data.

A new revelation has come forward regarding Facebook and its data sharing practices with a report from The Wall Street Journal claiming that the social networking company provided select companies "customised data-sharing deals" that let them gain "special access to user records".

The report claims that Facebook had entered into "special deals" with a handful of companies that allowed these companies to continue access user data well past 2015. The sources alleged that Facebook shared various user data with these companies, including "friend link" metrics and phone numbers.

Facebook has admitted the WSJ largely got its facts right, but insists that these extensions - given to the likes of Nissan and the Royal Bank of Canada - were meant to help companies adapt to the new privacy regulations. They also raise further questions about who has access to the data of billions of Facebook users and why they had access, at a time when Congress is demanding the company be held accountable for the flow of that data.

"But other than that, things were shut down", he told the Wall Street Journal.

Kia recalls over 500K vehicles; air bags may not inflate
Included are the 2010 through 2013 Forte, 2011 through 2013 Optima, and Sedona and Optima Hybrid minivans made in 2011 and 2012. Kia said in the NHTSA release that it is still working on a remedy with the recall set to begin on July 27.

"As we were winding down over the year, there was a small number of companies that asked for short-term extensions, and that, we worked through with them".

It "isn't clear when all of the deals ultimately expired or how many companies got extensions", the daily said.

The latest report of data-sharing on Facebook comes after The New York Times reported that the platform formed data-sharing partnerships with tech giants including Apple and Samsung.

Facebook reportedly gave certain companies preferential treatment as well, setting up "internal teams dedicated to brokering and developing customized data deals". The deals gave device makers access to users' information, such as relationship status and political affiliation.

The arrangements with device makers and software bug issue are likely to be examined by the Federal Trade Commission.
