President Donald Trump speaks to reporters before leaving the White House in Washington, Friday, June 8, 2018, to attend the G7 Summit in Charlevoix, Quebec, Canada.

A pardon of Ali would be purely symbolic: The Supreme Court overturned the conviction in a unanimous decision in 1971.

The US President said he was looking at a long list of names for potential pardons which included the heavyweight champion, who died in 2016.

President Donald Trump said Friday he was considering pardoning the late boxing champion Muhammad Ali.

Trump told reporters that the legendary boxer is just one of 3,000 names he's considering pardoning, because "many of those names really have been treated unfairly". "I'm thinking about that very seriously and some others", he said, referring to his presidential power to pardon those convicted of federal crimes. I'm thinking about that seriously. The events that led up to his arrest and losing his title started with his refusing the draft on the grounds that as a black Muslim, he was a conscientious objector and thus would not enter the United States military.

"The power to pardon is a lovely thing", he added.

And earlier this week, Trump granted clemency to Alice Johnson after Kim Kardashian West championed her case. But they know a lot of things that we're not going to know.

Trump elaborated: 'He was not very popular then, his memory is very popular now. "If he accepts Muhammad Ali being right for what he did, and want to give him a pardon, then that pardon should be going out to all those people who kneel". He lost his boxing licenses for three years until the New York Supreme Court ordered his licenses be reinstated in 1970.

And Trump recently pardoned conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza, who was convicted of a campaign finance violation.

U.S. boxer Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. on January 17, 1942, three-time World Heavyweight Champion and victor of an Olympic Light-heavyweight gold medal, shouts at a Japanese boxer during an exhibition fight in Tokyo, 01 July 1976. The White House announced it had pardoned Johnson later Wednesday.

"I would get more thrill out of pardoning people nobody has heard of, like Alice yesterday", said Trump, referring to his commutation of Alice Johnson, a woman who served more than 20 years on a first-time drug charge.

He said if the players or the athletes have "a friend or people they know about who have been unfairly treated by the system, let me know".
