Trump ramps up Twitter criticism of Canada ahead of G7 getting underway

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has pressed Washington to reconsider the US tariffs imposed on Canadian steel and aluminum, and encouraged President Donald Trump to work with Canada to address unfair trade.

The G7, or "Group of Seven", is now made up of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, and Japan. "But he doesn't bring up the fact that they charge us up to 300% on dairy - hurting our Farmers, killing our Agriculture", the U.S. president said. According to the World Bank, America's average tariff is 1.6 per cent, the same as the EU's, only slightly higher than Japan's 1.4 per cent and double Canada's 0.8 per cent.

Trump criticized the Canadian prime minister for acting "meek and mild" during their G-7 meetings, accusing him of changing his tone after Trump departed for a planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she finds President Donald Trump's tweet disavowing a common statement after the Group of Seven summit in Canada "sobering" and "a little depressing".

"It's in everybody's interest", Conte, who also is attending the summit, tweeted.

Kudlow said Trudeau "stabbed us in the back" and "did a great disservice to the whole G7" with his "amateur political stunt".

Trudeau got direct personal support from some European leaders.

He was reacting to Trudeau's declaration that Canadians would "not be pushed around" and would hit back at punishing U.S. tariffs on metal imports with "equivalent tariffs". Trudeau said he told Trump in candid conversations that US steel and aluminum tariffs imposed this month were "insulting" and that Canada will move forward with counter-tariffs.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday rejected a US demand for a sunset clause in NAFTA but said he was prepared to compromise on the issue, which is holding up talks to update the 1990s-era pact.

Microsoft kicked off with a new game in the long-running and beloved science-fiction shooter series Halo, called Halo Infinite. Yep, The Elder Scrolls VI is now officially a thing, but Starfield will come first so don't expect TES6 any time soon.

"We will not, can not sign a trade deal that expires automatically every five years. If it doesn't happen, we come out even better!"

Trudeau's view of how the summit went was a marked contrast to Trump's take.

This year's G7 summit had been dubbed "G6-plus-1" by many, referring to United States isolation over issues including trade and the Iran nuclear deal. Now there is a question mark over that.

"I agree with President Donald Trump". To him, the gap between the value of what America sells and what it buys in foreign markets reflects economic weakness, trade accords that are unfair to the USA and abusive policies by other countries.

France and Europe are standing by the G7 communique, a French presidency official said, adding anyone departing from the commitments made at the summit would be showing their "incoherence and inconsistency".

In his press conference, Trudeau had spoken of retaliatory measures that Canada would take next month in response to Trump's decision to slap tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union. You know, whether you like it or not, and it may not be politically correct, but we have a world to run. "It is impossible to predict what Trump will do next", said a senior G7 official on the summit outcome.

The sides had managed to eke out a compromise final summit statement that pledged to protect the global rules-based order and reform the trade system.

Trump dismissed Trudeau's comments as "false statements" before announcing the United States would withdraw from the communique.
