Mercedes-Benz faces massive recall in Europe

The Transport Ministry said Monday that up to 774,000 Mercedes cars were affected by the switch-off technology in Europe, mentioning the already recalled Vito van as well as Daimler's GLC 220d and C 220d models.

Other vehicle makers have been found to have fitted defeat devices. Among the functions brought into question by the German Transport Ministry is the software used to regulate the amount of Ad Blue solution injected into the SCR filter that's fitted to the recalled vehicles.

For their part, German firms have announced dozens of new electric and hybrid models for the coming years in a bid to bring down emissions of both greenhouse gas Carbon dioxide - the original reason they turned to diesel - and of harmful NOx.

German authorities have also discovered special programming in Daimler cars that they have classified as "inadmissible".

The company had earlier said that it contested the legal basis for the finding that the Vito's engine controls were disallowed.

German newspaper Bild am Sonntag reported Sunday that German transportation officials may have found up to five illegal emissions control devices on the vehicles, according to Reuters.

It may not have been the focus of the summit, but Korean War vets and their families were hoping the issue would come up. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has Koreans in Spokane closely watching the outcome.

The German government has ordered carmaker Daimler to immediately recall 238,000 vehicles equipped with software that turns off emissions controls under certain conditions.

The recall only applies to Germany at the moment because the KBA's authority does not extend beyond the country's borders. Daimler hasn't contested the existence of the devices, but has argued that the devices may not be illegal.

A Daimler spokesman said he would not comment on the BamS story, adding, "We are cooperating to a full extent and transparently with the KBA and the federal transport ministry".

The ordered recall follows Daimler's decision to voluntarily recall three million vehicles in the European Union a year ago to perform software updates and improve emissions performance. "Those functions are part of a complex emission control system created to ensure robust emission control in different driving conditions and over the lifetime of a vehicle".

Evercore estimates the recall will cost Daimler less than €100 million ($155.33m), helped by the fact no fines are now being imposed.

Speaking with the American publication, Arndt Ellinghorst, analyst with Evercore ISI in London, said: "We don't see any evidence that Daimler was designing software to deliberately cheat on emission testing". "Overall, this outcome should de-risk the stock".
