Who gained and who lost what from the Trump-Kim summit

Trump-Kim summit vindicates Cold War doctrine of deterrence Winston Peters urges North Korea to 'realise' denuclearisation commitment after Trump-Kim summit

At the end of the historic summit, Trump and Kim signed a joint statement to put in writing the commitment to a denuclearized and peaceful Korean Peninsula.

U.S. President Donald Trump waves next to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore June 12, 2018.

The account Wednesday in the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper could signal the first rift with President Trump over the perceived path forward with the North's leader, Kim Jong Un.

The accord establishes new US-North Korea relations building towards a lasting, stable peace.

The historic summit meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has Koreans in Spokane closely watching the outcome.

USA officials and the North Korean state news agency struck a hopeful tone as the meeting approached, while negotiators from both countries met privately in the last hours to iron out agreements, such as over the definition of denuclearisation and the terms under which Pyongyang might agree to dismantle its nuclear arsenal.

Trump gave no further details, but previous statements demanded that North Korean effectively eliminate its nuclear program before any US concessions can be considered.

He said the commitment has brought North Korea "to an important crossroad".

There was little else mention of denuclearization of North Korea in the statement, which mainly focused on stopping hostilities between North Korea and the United States.

Kim summit 'may not have happened without Otto Warmbier'
The Wyoming, Ohio, native was in North Korea with a tour group when he was detained for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster from a hotel.

It may not have been the focus of the summit, but Korean War vets and their families were hoping the issue would come up.

The remarks contradicted countless previous declarations by USA political and military officials over the years that the drills are routine, defensive and absolutely critical.

"This person is not a wise representative for the USA", he said, taking a direct shot at Mr. Trump during Tuesday's press conference in Tehran, Iranian state news outlet Fars News reported.

"For Hawai'i, this should assuage fears of a possible nuclear attack from North Korea".

The Singapore summit was a potentially legacy-defining meeting for both men - comparable to president Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to China, or Ronald Reagan's 1986 summit with Mikhail Gorbachev in Reykjavik.

But if negotiations hold and the Korean peninsula moves toward peace and reconciliation, the USA will slowly lose one of its most critical security footholds in Asia.

Trump said he had formed a "special bond" with Kim, whom he described as "very talented". "The new element is that we agreed to stop our annual exercise cycle with our South Korean allies". However, Trump said North Korea sanctions would remain in place - for now. The South Korean military seemed similarly surprised.

According to the Washington Post, between 1996 and 2005, joint search teams recovered 229 sets of American remains in North Korea, but then tensions between the two countries escalated.

But it was encouraging that Mr Trump does not plan to lift United States sanctions immediately and expects North Korea to admit U.S. inspectors to verify denuclearisation compliance, and maintain its cessation of nuclear explosion and missile flight tests, he noted.
