It did not take long for bookmakers to slash Donald Trump's odds of winning the Nobel Peace Prize in the wake of the historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The deadline for this year's prize passed in January, so this nomination would make him eligible for next year.

But before placing your bets, you may want to read what some members of the five-strong Norwegian Nobel Committee, which chooses the victor of the $1 million prize each October, have written about the USA president in the past.

In 2009, the Nobel Peace Prize award to newly-elected US President Barack Obama was widely criticized as premature.

A group of 18 Republican lawmakers nominated Trump for the prize last month for his dealing with North Korea.

In this handout photograph provided by The Strait Times, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, left, is pictured with U.S. President Donald Trump during their historic summit on June 12, 2018, in Singapore.

Christian Tybring-Gjedde and Per-Willy Amundsen, members of the Progress Party, said Trump has "taken a huge and important step in the direction of the disarmament, peace and reconciliation between North and South Korea", Norwegian news agency NTB said, the Associated Press reported. "A process is underway to ensure world peace in the future".

Nominations for this year's prize also formally closed on February 1, before the summit was agreed. It's a fragile process, but we must of course do what we can to help this process to bring good results. The global community ratcheted up economic sanctions at the time as North Korea launched several intercontinental ballistic missiles and tested their most powerful nuclear weapon.

The summit in Singapore has proven that US President Donald Trump is a "man of peace" worthy of the highest award of this caliber, two Norwegian MPs representing the right-wing Progress Party maintain.

Past winners include former United States president Barack Obama and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
