"Importantly, numerous medications associated with depression as a potential side effect include commonly used prescription drugs - some of which are also available over-the-counter without a prescription", said lead study authorDima Qato, a pharmacy researcher at the University of IL at Chicago.
The researchers, from the University of IL at Chicago, looked at how more than 26,000 people from 2005 to 2014 used medications.
They found that more than 200 commonly used prescription drugs have depression or suicide listed as potential side effects.
Study author Mark Olfson said the same to NPR, though he added he was surprised by the "strength of the association" between the number of drugs being taken and the risk of depression.
What's more, about 15 percent of adults with polypharmacy in the prescription medication study experienced depression. Currently, more than one third of Americans are taking drugs that come with an increased risk of depression and-whether or not they realize it-patients are feeling the impact.
Prevalence of depression higher for adults reporting use of multiple meds with depression as side effect.
"With depression as one of the leading causes of disability and increasing national suicide rates, we need to think innovatively about depression as a public health issue", stated lead author Dima Qato, an assistant professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Till now, we were familiar with the broad category of generalised side effects.
"Product labeling for over-the-counter medications does not include comprehensive information on adverse effects including depression", said the report. Studies have shown mixed evidence, for example, about a link between commonly taken high blood pressure drugs called beta blockers and depression.
Some people who developed depression as a side effect of medication, however, might have had undiagnosed or untreated depression before they took the other drugs, said Pinar Karaca-Mandic, academic director of the Medical Industry Leadership Institute at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
For prescription drugs with suicide listed as a potential side effect, usage increased from 17 percent to 24 percent, and use of three or more drugs concurrently increased from 2 percent to 3 percent. Even with people who used only one of those drugs, it is 7 percent likely to get depressed. This type of concurrent use is termed polypharmacy, and it is linked to a greater likelihood of feelings of depression.
