Antarctica ice loss trippled in five years, new study reveals
Antarctica is now melting three times faster than ever before
17 June, 2018, 10:39
The analysis suggests that 3 trillion tons' worth of Antarctic ice losses have increased global sea levels by 7.6 mm (0.3 inches) since 1992, and that the increase is accelerating.
"Based on this evidence from the Pliocene, today's current carbon dioxide levels are not enough to destabilize the land-based ice on the Antarctic continent", said Jeremy Shakun, lead author of this paper and assistant professor of earth and environmental science at U.S. Boston College. Globally sea levels are rising by about 3mm a year.
Antarctica's potential contribution to global sea level rise from its land-held ice is nearly 7.5 times greater than all other sources of land-held ice in the world combined.
"This is like the "straw that broke the camel's back", triggering the runaway collapse of large areas of ice shelves weakened by pre-existing fracturing and decades of surface flooding". Technology can also be redesigned to rejuvenate the environment.B ut the most important step which can be taken regarding pollution is that the policymakers make it a priority to keep an environment check and find better policies which could help us to live in a stable environment.
Up to now, scientists have struggled in determining whether Antarctica has accumulated more mass through snowfall than it loses in meltwater run-off and ice flows into the ocean.
The findings were published today in the journal Nature.
In order to reach these conclusions, scientists looked at ice loss in 24 different ways using 10-15 satellites, in addition to air and ground measurements and computer simulations.
In the last quarter century, the Antarctic ice sheet, which is often used as a key indicator of climate change, has melted into enough water to cover Texas to a depth of almost 13 feet, according to researchers calculations.
According to the recent study, Antartica ice is melting much faster than the expectation of scientists as it has tripled in a decade (since 2007).
Antarctica is covered by ice sheets that get channelled into the oceans through a network of ice streams and glaciers and the continent has seen a reduction in the extent of floating ice shelves.
ESA's Director of Earth Observation Programmes, Josef Aschbacher, added, "CryoSat and Sentinel-1 are clearly making an essential contribution to understanding how ice sheets are responding to climate change and affecting sea level, which is a major concern". That is pushing up global sea levels by 0.6mm annually, a three-fold increase since the last assessment in 2012.
Oceans are now rising by 3.4 millimetres (0.13 inches) per year. The scientists have finally revealed the reasons behind the thinning and melting of the enormous chunk of ice in this handsome white continent. Sea level rise is a threat to cities from NY to Shanghai as well as low-lying nations from the Pacific Ocean to the Netherlands. Sea ice typically forms a thin and highly-dynamic veneer up to a few metres thick that covers between about 3 million square kilometres (in winter) to 19-20 million square kilometres (in summer) of the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica.
"Considering sea level rise, for example, the future rise could be a little smaller or a little larger, or a lot larger - there is a "long tail" on the "bad" side". This week's issue of Nature features several other reports on Antarctica and its future.
Or alternatively, he continued, Antarctica could drive faster changes, ones that "begin to exceed what we're going to be able to cope with".
