5 first ladies speak out on family separations at border

US First Lady Melania Trump announces her Melania Trump 'hates' to see children separated from families at US border

President Trump doubled down on his administration's practice of separating illegal immigrant families at the Mexican border yesterday, saying the United States "will not be a migrant camp", as outrage mounted with MA officials blasting the policy and demanding immediate change.

Democrats have turned up the pressure over the policy, and some Republicans have joined the chorus of criticism.

On Twitter Monday, Michelle Obama re-tweeted a message from former first lady Laura Bush promoting a column Bush wrote decrying the policy.

The Trump administration's policy of separating families is "the same way Barack Obama did it".

"You take a look at the death and destruction that's been caused by people coming into this country without going through a process".

Her remarks at the Women's Forum of NY awards lunch were followed up by a tweet on Monday afternoon in which Clinton said: "Every parent who has ever held a child in their arms, every human behind with a sense of compassion and decency, should be outraged".

"We are doing none of those things". On Monday, he defended it again saying it was a matter of rule of law, "We can not and will not encourage people to bring children by giving them blanket immunity from our laws".

In April, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a "zero tolerance" policy in which all those apprehended entering the United States illegally would be criminally charged, which has led to children being separated from their parents.

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, a member of the Freedom Caucus, said he's skeptical that even a full-throated endorsement from Trump will be enough to get the compromise bill through the House. Nor did she mention the fact that, in many cases, these children are not part of a "family unit", but rather strangers to the adults they cross the border with, adults who pretend to be parents in the hope America will "catch and release" them into the country - because catching and releasing them is the only way to keep these families together. In a separate incident, children were recorded crying out for their parents.

But those on board were alarmed to see flames spout from the wing due to what was termed a "minor technical malfunction". No injuries were sustained during the incident, which occurred at Russian Airlines Airbus 1319-100.

For both, it was an unusual entry into a fierce political debate.

"I can't come up with an example of a time that a first lady's statement comes pretty close to contravening the West Wing", she told the Washington Post. "It is immoral. And it breaks my heart", Bush writes. Eleanor Roosevelt actually contradicted her husband on the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II and on European refugees during the same war. Her spokeswoman said that Mrs. Trump believes "we need to be a country that follows all laws", but also one "that governs with heart".

Because she's a Texas native and lived through the Katrina debacle, Laura Bush's denunciation of the Trump policy is especially noteworthy and meaningful.

Because the children of prosecuted migrants are not charged with any crime, they are not permitted to be jailed with their parents.

Unlike Trump, however, previous administrations, including that of Obama, did not have a policy of separating almost all families at the border. By law, when adults are detained and criminally prosecuted, their children can not be housed with them in jail. Since a year ago, there has been a 325 per cent increase in unaccompanied alien children and a 435 per cent increase in family units entering the country illegally.

And House Republicans excluded Democrats from drafting immigration legislation they may bring to the floor this week.

On Monday, White House Adviser to the President Kellyanne Conway reiterated that defense during an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press with Chuck Todd".

"Let's be perfectly clear - the choice to implement this appalling policy is a choice President Trump, and no one else, made", Murphy said.
