Finally, after years of speculation and concern, we may start to get some scientific answers now that the World Health Organization has chose to classify gaming disorder as an addiction, comparable to compulsive gambling or substance abuse.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently released the 11th edition of its International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD).

Video gaming can be addictive in the same way as cocaine or gambling, the World Health Organization said Monday in a much anticipated update of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11).

Video game addiction is a term that has been used for years by parents and mental health professionals who believe that it's a real disorder.

"However, people who partake in gaming should be alert to the amount of time they spend on gaming activities, particularly when it is to the exclusion of other daily activities, as well as to any changes in their physical or psychological health and social functioning that could be attributed to their pattern of gaming behaviour".

Responding to the decision to including gaming addiction, the Video Games Coalition - an industry lobby group - said their products were "enjoyed safely and sensibly by more than 2 billion people worldwide" across all kinds of genres, devices and platforms.

'We come across parents who are distraught, not only because they're seeing their child drop out of school, but because they're seeing an entire family structure fall apart, ' said Dr Henrietta Bowden-Jones, a spokesman for behavioural addictions at the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Griffiths said playing video games, for the vast majority of people, is more about entertainment and novelty, citing the overwhelming popularity of games like "Pokemon Go".

On Monday, June 18th, the World Health Organization officially added "Gaming Disorder" to their 11th "Classification of Diseases" listing, and ignited a vast debate among community members in regards to its severity. The DSM-5 calls out "Internet Gaming Disorder" but says it's a condition that warrants more clinical research and experience before it can be classified in the book as a formal disorder.

Gaming also piques gamers' interest in new hobbies and careers such as history (15 percent), information technology (12 percent) and art (7 percent), while 34 percent cite improved cognition, problem-solving or social skills thanks to gaming.

A new chapter also has been added on traditional medicine.

It is scheduled to be presented to WHO member states at their annual World Health Assembly in May 2019 for adoption in January 2022, the WHO said.

While gamers are willing to acknowledge the potential downsides of their past-time, with 23 percent claiming that gaming addiction should be ranked alongside drug/alcohol/gambling addiction, the question of commentators linking violence with gaming drew a almost unanimous response.
