May pledges £20bn NHS spending boost

Five key questions about the Prime Minister's NHS funding announcement answered. The settlement would equate to an average increase of around 3.4 per cent per year over the next five years.

Mr Hunt said there had been "huge, very difficult" discussions with the Treasury that "went to the wire", but that Chancellor Philip Hammond was certain that the additional spending was affordable.

What do the experts think?

Theresa May is under pressure to explain how the government plans to provide the NHS with an extra £384m a week after talk of a "Brexit dividend" to help provide the cash was widely scoffed at.

The prime minister said: "More than a hundred years before the National Health Service was conceived, William Marsden set up the Royal Free to help individuals who needed it".

Work on the plan will get under way nearly immediately, with final proposals expected towards the end of the year.

Where will the money come from?

That could include reducing spending elsewhere.

Scottish Conservative health spokesman Miles Briggs told the same programme: "In terms of health spending in England it has grown about 10% and in Scotland it has only grown at 5%". It said "it looks like there is limited potential elsewhere for making cuts that could compensate for rises in health spending".

McDonald's Actions May Be The Impetus For The Last Plastic Straws 06/18/2018
Across the pond, " a petition calling for the chain to stop using plastic straws has drawn almost a half million signatures". The paper straws will disintegrate in the environment, rather than plastic ending up as litter or landfill.

"So across the nation taxpayers will have to contribute a bit more in a fair and balanced way to support the NHS we all use". The specifics of how this will work haven't yet been outlined. Tax rises? Borrowing? What's plan B? "Achieving that aim will be best achieved by having a locally elected, locally accountable Health Minister working alongside Executive colleagues at Stormont", he said. This is likely to raise "substantial sums" according to the IFS, but also "prove unpopular".

The Conservative government is claiming it can pay for a £20bn per year cash injection into the NHS primarily through money saved by ending European Union payments.

Mrs May is now under pressure from Labour to back up her comments ahead of a speech in London, with shadow chancellor John McDonnell suggesting her figures do not add up.

"As a pure, sort of arithmetic point of view, over this period, there's no money". Today's announcement confirms that Theresa May has failed to give the NHS the funding it needs, and much of the funding announced today is based on wishful thinking.

"We've increased the health budget by 9.6% in real terms between 2011 and 2018/19".

Mrs May is under fire for claiming that a spending boost worth around £20bn extra per year by 2024 will be part-paid for by a "Brexit dividend", despite economists saying that leaving the European Union will have a significant negative impact on the public finances.

Any investment must be welcomed, but the patients and NHS staff need certainty, not yet another reckless pledge from politicians.

Scottish Secretary David Mundell has also called for the funding to be passed on to NHS Scotland, saying the money "has the potential to make a real difference for people in Scotland".

She said technology was "transforming how we engage with the NHS" and it can "improve the way care is delivered".
