Germany, the defending World Cup champions, suffered a 2-0 loss to South Korea today meaning for the first time in team history they've failed to advance past the Group Stage in the World Cup.

With Germany poised to take their place in the last 16 if they could find their way through the South Korea defence in the other game in the group, two late goals shattered the world champions' hope of progressing in one of the biggest shocks in recent World Cup history.

Germany were caught out at the back as they threw men forward in search for a late victor, with Kim Young-Gwon flicking home inside the box two minutes into injury time.

And the Arsenal midfielder clashed with a fan as he left the pitch after Germany were beaten by South Korea.

In the final minutes of tonight's game, Mats Hummels was presented with the flawless opportunity to give Germany an advantage in their final group game against South Korea.

The reigning champions were beaten 2-0 by South Korea in a tense, drama-fuelled Group F fixture and exit the competition with just three points to their name.

Goretza nearly put Germany in front two minutes after the restart but was thwarted by a superb stop from Jo Hyeon-Woo - and then news filtered through of Ludwig Augustinsson's opener for Sweden.

Germany have crashed out of the World Cup, despite being considered one of the clear favourites to lift the trophy in Russian Federation.

Still, South Korea's win was splashed on the front page of nearly every newspaper in the country. But Sweden made it all moot by beating Mexico 3-0 in Ekaterinburg.

They were expected to win at a canter against South Korea, who joined them in elimination due to Sweden's 3-0 win over Mexico, but an even game was settled by late goals from Kim Young-gwon and Son Heung-min.

The Arsenal playmaker was employed in a relatively deep role and he simply wasn't able to cut through South Korea's resolute defence. While the shocking defeat to Mexico in their opening match had disappointed many, their come back against Sweden later had raised the expectations of the fans.

Argentina, the losing finalists in 2014, were heading for a humiliating World Cup exit before Marcos Rojo scored a stunning victor on 86 minutes to send Nigeria home. Joshua Kimmich sent a cross to an unmarked Leon Goretzka for a header from point-blank range, and Jo soared to his right at the last minute and punched the ball out of play. South Korea have smaller players, very fast players.

Both of the South Korean goals came in injury time.

The teams continued to trade chances, with Son rolling one just left of the goal in the 78th minute, and Hummels missing the target with a header in the 86th.
