Samsung and Apple settle ongoing patent dispute from 2011

Apple, Samsung settle U.S. patent dispute Apple and Samsung settle their patent dispute after 7 years of legal battles

Apple's lawsuit claimed Samsung, now the world's biggest handset maker, copied the design and other features of the iPhone as the smartphone market was exploding.

In a line which seems to be one that crops up over and over again, Apple and Samsung have once again been sparring over an ongoing legal battle relating to a design patent. Terms were not available, but according to the Wall Street Journal, the companies filed a notice in California federal court that they had agreed to settle the case.

"They have agreed to drop [the lawsuits] and settle their remaining claims and counterclaims in this matter", District Court Judge Lucy Koh announced today.

This agreement only comes after a court sided with Apple in May, telling Samsung to hand over $539 million.

Harley on Wednesday responded while sidestepping the controversy and not commenting on the president's tweets. S&P says it will resolve the credit watch after Harley's second-quarter earnings.

Neither Samsung nor Apple revealed what the terms of the settlement were. This verdict prompted Apple to issue a statement claiming their battle with Samsung was always about "more than money", and that their primary goal with the suits was to "protect the hard work and innovation" of their team. The case began with the iPhone 3GS and the Galaxy S i9000: since then, both Apple and Samsung have completely reinvented their software and hardware styling. Efforts to offset Samsung's position as a key display provider, for example, have been stymied by rivals in the segment struggling to hit the panel quality and yield numbers that Apple demands.

Samsung appealed part of that award, taking its case all the way to the Supreme Court, arguing that damages should be limited since patent infringement involved only certain features.

In 2012, a U.S. jury awarded California-based Apple $1.05bn in damages for the copied features, which included design elements like the screen that displays icons in a grid. When the case finally went to trial in 2012, Apple emerged victorious, with a jury awarding Apple $1 billion in damages.
