Ed Sheeran hit with $100m lawsuit for 'copying' Marvin Gaye's song

Freda Brock | 29 June, 2018, 09:41

Sheeran was also sued over "Thinking Out Loud" in 2016.

The lawsuit claims that the Sheeran hit single copied "the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic composition" of "Let's Get It On", arguing that those elements of Sheeran's single "are not the product of independent creation".

This isn't the first time Sheeran has been sued for this kind of alleged plagiarism.

Structured Asset Sales owns one-third of the copyright ever since Edward Townsend - who co-wrote the track along with Marvin Gaye - died in 2003.

"According to the lawsuit, Sheeran's song has the same melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bassline, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation and looping as 'Let's Get it On, '" TMZ reported.

Google Home and Chromecast Hit by Major Outage
Those complaining to the Made By Google account on Twitter have been advised to reboot their smart speaker and their WiFi router. Google, however, refused to confirm the cause of the outage and whether or not it was associated with a broken software patch.

"Thinking Out Loud" peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2014 and has been certified "diamond" by the RIAA for streaming-equivalent sales of over 10 million copies.

Other defendants listed in the claim include Sony/ATV Music Publishing, the Atlantic record label and Amy Padge, Sheeran's co-writer on the song.

There is no word if the Gaye family will be joining the suit or filing a separate suit. That suit was settled privately a year ago. TMZ reports that the lawsuit was filed Structured Asset Sales in 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in NY.
