Paul George opts out of contract, becomes unrestricted free agent

Paul George has made his free agency decision.

Per ESPN, George agreed to re-sign on a four-year, $137 million max contract with Oklahoma City.

In the special, George said he wants to pick the front office that gives him the best chance to win.

With George re-signed and Carmelo Anthony under contract for next season, the Thunder are headed for a monumental payroll and luxury-tax bill, something ownership is prepared to pay. Since his trade from IN, the Thunder and Lakers have always been considered the heavy favorites for George this summer, with the Philadelphia 76ers lurking as a dark-horse candidate, and that remains true now.

Privately, Thunder executives have said going all the way back to the start of last season that they were prepared to spend heavily this season if they had to. For fans put off by the smugness of the Lakers running out the clock on George's free agency, this is perhaps the sweetest of all. That declaration led to the Pacers dealing George to the Thunder with the thought that the star forward was destined for Los Angeles in the long term.

Germany eliminated from the World Cup
Four of the last five winners, including Germany this year, have failed to get out of the group stage of the next tournament. The defending champions lost 0-2 to South Korea in their last group F game to end with three points.

George also considered playing for his hometown Los Angeles Lakers.

Presti's decision to trade for George last summer was one final - and many felt futile - attempt to return the Thunder to those heights once again.

It appears as though the team's gamble for George has paid off in the short term, and now the organization may very well be operating with house money to sell him on a long-term future. "I mean, honestly, I can't say it any more than that".

The Thunder will soon find out if that's enough to keep him. It's unclear if or when the Lakers might have a meeting with the 14-time All-Star, if they haven't already.

It was not an unexpected move for George, who averaged 21.9 points for the Thunder this past season.
