With HTC just as well-known for its Vive VR headset as its phones these days, the company made a decision to merge the two divisions into one at around the same time as the layoffs.

HTC WILL SLICE 1,500 workers from its Taiwanese factories as it goes on the hunt to turn a profit, according to Engadget and Bloomberg Taipei's Samson Ellis.

As noted by Reuters, HTC once sold one in every ten smartphones globally, but recent years have seen the division's sales dwindle in the face of competition from Samsung, Apple, and increasingly popular Chinese brands.

The mobe maker has persistently failed to come up with anything that pushes it ahead of competitors, leading to a billion-dollar deal late past year with Google to effectively sell 2,000 of its handset engineers to the monster web corp.

Excluding the one-time non-core business gains from the sale, HTC's core business still incurred first quarter operating losses of NT$5.2 billion.

The smartphone manufacturer confirmed it plans to complete the layoff process by September as part of a reorganization effort to increase profitability, CNN Money reported.
