Third-party developers able to scan Gmail accounts

Software Developers are Scanning the Inboxes of Gmail Users App developers have been reading your Gmail, and it's alarmingly common

One company told the Wall Street Journal that the practice was "common" and a "dirty secret".

Letting employees read user emails has become "common practice" for companies that collect this type of data, says Thede Loder, the former chief technology officer at eDataSource Inc., a rival to Return Path.

For example, the company Return Path uses computers to scan about 100 million emails a day from Gmail, Microsoft or Yahoo! email inboxes of those who have signed up for a free app through its partner network.

Not that long ago, Google promised its users that it will stop using bots to search for potential information, that could aid advertising, within their emails.

Google's mail service has always been criticized for the invasive practices of the company, which runs nearly entirely on employing all the data it collects on users to attract advertisers and target their wares to the people most likely to buy them.

People who have connected third-party apps to their accounts may have unwittingly given external developers permission to read their messages.

Privacy matters Google may have promised to stop scanning the inboxes of Gmail users for ad-targeting purposes previous year, but it still lets third-party app developers read your private messages.

Google's developer agreement prohibits exposing a user's private data to anyone else "without explicit opt-in consent from that user".

Google lets people connect their account to third-party email management tools, or services such as travel planning and price comparisons. This is in contrast with what Google promised past year, where it said that it would stop reading its users email messages, which might be true, but it has done very little to stop other partner organisations from doing so.

The Internet giant recently rolled out new features for Android users to make it easier for them to navigate their Gmail accounts and review security and privacy options. Top tech companies are under pressure in the United States and Europe to do more to protect user privacy and be more transparent about any parties with access to people's data. At one point, the company's employees apparently used to read about 8,000 uncensored emails to help train the company's software.
