Over 40 World Trade Organization members are warning the Trump administration that US auto tariffs could seriously disrupt the world market.

It also underscores China's new boldness in trying to seize leadership amid divisions between the United States and its European, Canadian and Japanese allies over issues including free trade, climate change and foreign policy.

Amid the fierce polemics between Beijing and Washington concerning trade and tariffs, Chinese media have started a seemingly coordinated campaign badmouthing United States tourism this week, with some papers even urging Chinese tourists to take a detour to the tumultuous Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwestern China instead.

In a commentary on Wednesday, China's official Xinhua news agency said China and Europe "should resist trade protectionism hand in hand".

China's foreign ministry said Tuesday that Beijing won't hesitate to retaliate against US tariffs and escalate a trade war with Washington if tensions over economic negotiations with the Trump administration continue to rise.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told a news conference on Monday that the reminder from the embassy in Washington was meant to inform Chinese visitors of "potential risks" when there would be a spike in trips to the U.S. during summer.

Wang fell 15m off a wall in the village of Bonnieux , near Avignon, a picturesque area popular with tourists, local police said. The HNA group is the owner of Hainan Airlines, China's fourth-largest airline and the largest private airline in China.

Hopes are dwindling for the world's two biggest economies to reach a breakthrough this week before Washington starts charging tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese imports.

Travel and Leisure magazine's report on the alert, meanwhile, noted that China has been warning its citizens about gun violence in the USA for years. "To put it simply, the U.S.is opening fire on the entire world, including itself", he said. "They firmly believe that free trade is a powerful engine for global economic growth".

However, China's offer at the upcoming summit to open up reflects Beijing's concern that it is set to face tighter European Union controls, and regulators are also blocking Chinese takeover attempts in the United States.

"Public security in the United States is not good".

"Trump has split the West, and China is seeking to capitalize on that".

Chinese newspapers described the move as a counterstrike in an escalating trade war.

The industry source said Beijing had been unable to address the Trump administration's concerns on Chinese trade policies in at least five key area, including forced technology transfers, Chinese industrial overcapacity, government subsidies, SOE reform, and Beijing's restrictions in the cloud computing industry.
