
An accidental tuberculosis tube spill prompted a mass evacuation at two buildings on the campus of a prestigious Baltimore hospital, according to new reports. Some employees have been isolated and were expected to be evaluated by the fire department, spokesperson Kim Hoppe said in a statement.
A small amount of frozen tuberculosis was spilled between two hospital buildings.
Baltimore City Fire has secured Johns Hopkins Hospital after people in one building may have been exposed to tuberculosis during the transfer of a frozen vial between buildings. The release triggered a heavy emergency response outside the complex of Johns Hopkins hospital buildings, including the shutdown of the two used for cancer research. The lid of the fumbled sample reportedly came off, sparking fear of a tuberculosis outbreak within the buildings and prompting a full evacuation while staff and disease experts determined how to move forward. The Baltimore City Fire Department was on the scene to make sure it was safe for patients and employees to return to the buildings.
