Many Democrats fear that Kavanaugh's conservative credentials - in a bench that is now tied 4-4 between liberal and conservative justices- will tilt the court right for the foreseeable future, allowing a rewriting of everything from hard won rights on abortion to same-sex marriage.

Earthjustice, a nonprofit environmental law organization, said it opposes Kavanaugh's nomination because "his overly restrictive approach to agency authority, and limited view of the public's right to access the courts, could jeopardize the ability of federal agencies to carry out their vital missions and threaten the American public's access to justice".

"The administration's going to work very closely with members of the [Judiciary] Committee and members of the Senate to make Judge Kavanaugh available", Pence said.

Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee began to discuss the matter Tuesday evening, but they had not yet made any determination on whether to ask the White House to turn over all the documents from Kavanaugh's time as Bush's staff secretary and as an associate counsel.

Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana said he was bracing for a tough confirmation battle as Democrats focus on abortion. Sens. Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota have all been floated as possible "yes" votes for Kavanaugh, but on Tuesday, they were just as mum as their moderate colleagues on the other side of the aisle.

The 53-year-old Yale-educated appellate court judge was born in Washington D.C., aided arguments for President Bill Clinton's impeachment, and worked at the White House under President George W. Bush.

Stabenow said in a Monday statement that the vacancy "represents a very consequential moment for our country where we can chose to make progress on so many important issues for MI families or we can turn the clock back".

Kavanaugh's nomination comes as Trump's lawyers are resisting pressure to be interviewed by Mueller, who's investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, whether anyone close to Trump colluded in the meddling and whether Trump sought to obstruct the probe.

"I'm not sure it's relevant to his job as a judge", said Sen.

While some fans might have expected Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to be chosen for this role, the newlyweds did not make the cut. His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge is fifth in line to the throne, and the sixth great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth .

Kavanaugh's paper trail is one reason that McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, advised President Donald Trump to consider other nominees who could be confirmed more quickly, ensuring the final votes occur ahead of the November midterm elections, when control of Congress will be at stake.

The AFL-CIO labor federation and several unions came out strongly against Kavanaugh's nomination. Others have seen an even deeper ulterior motive in the choice of a man who is seen as a Bush loyalist, a fact that should have put off Trump: Kavanaugh sees the U.S. presidency as such a unique and challenging job that he believes the White House occupant should be shielded from indictment, prosecution, or interrogation while in office.

On Monday, Trump phoned retiring Justice Kennedy to inform him that his former law clerk would be nominated to fill his seat.

All White House documents are given to the National Archives after the president leaves office as part of the Presidential Records Act.

The majority of the D.C. Circuit panel disagreed with that reasoning, noting that the Supreme Court had ruled in a 1984 case that undocumented workers were indeed employees for the purposes of collective bargaining law. One night after Kennedy announced his retirement, Trump met with Democratic Sens.

Other Republicans said there are limits. "We should evaluate this president's nominee fairly".
