President Donald Trump branded Germany a "captive of Russia" for its support of a Baltic Sea gas pipeline deal this morning (July 11).

"Europeans spend on defense many times more than Russian Federation and as much as China and I think you have no doubt, Mr. President, that this is an investment in common American and European defense and security, which can not be said with confidence about Russian Federation or Chinese spending", Tusk said.

The president appeared to be referring to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline that would bring gas from Russian Federation to Germany's northeastern Baltic coast, bypassing Eastern European nations like Poland and Ukraine and doubling the amount of gas Russian Federation can send directly to Germany.

Trump was due to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron later on Wednesday.

She said: "We have a tight relationship with our allies in the European Union, yet this government is tearing us away from them just as Trump is making a mockery of our so-called special relationship".

He vowed not to be "taken advantage" of by the European Union, which he accuses of freeloading by relying on the United States for its defence while blocking U.S. imports into the bloc, the world's biggest market.

"So we're supposed to protect Germany but they're getting their energy from Russian Federation".

That would send the alliance into a tailspin, damaging security by opening the question of whether NATO's most powerful member is still willing to defend its allies if one were attacked.

"Germany is captive of Russia because it is getting so much of its energy from Russia", Mr Trump said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials said the woman allegedly confronted the elderly man because he bumped into the child. Mendoza later told news channel KTLA-TV that he couldn't believe anyone would do that to an elderly man.

"European troops have been fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with American soldiers in Afghanistan; 870 fearless men and women sacrificed their lives, including 40 soldiers from my homeland, Poland", said Mr. Tusk. Trump's first words signalled this one is not going to be like this.

The NATO chief revealed the "main topic" of this week's summit will be how to make "further progress on burden sharing". "NATO has not treated us fairly, but I think we'll work something out".

Mr Stoltenberg said it was not up to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to decide on the pipeline and that it was a national decision.

German defence minister Ursula von der Leyen also responded defiantly to Mr Trump's barb.

Donald Trump speaks to media before leaving the White House for Europe. "'And it means a lot more to you than protecting us because I don't know how much protection we get by protecting you'".

Britain's summer 2016 referendum saw the leave side prevail by a 52-48 margin - a populist victory combined with Trump's surprise victory in the USA presidential race later in the year that sparked upheaval in the global order. For years, countries like Germany, Spain, Italy, Canada, and others have not even come close to meeting their obligations to the collective defense alliance.

Mr Trump predicted as he departed Washington that the "easiest" leg of his journey would be his scheduled sit-down with Mr Putin.

European Council President Donald Tusk said on Tuesday in a message to Trump that "it is always worth knowing who is your strategic friend and who is your strategic problem".

"The president has asked repeatedly what progress we've made in Afghanistan since he made his decision, and how much we've invested there since 2001", said the senior official.
