Kavanaugh is Trump's nominee for court

Trump Expected to Unveil Supreme Court Nominee Monday Night Trump plays up suspense over momentous Supreme Court nomination

"When Justice Kennedy announced his retirement, I urged the President to appoint a consensus nominee who could earn broad bipartisan support in the Senate and the confidence of the American people".

Leo said Trump made the Supreme Court's future the "defining issue" of his presidential campaign, and said that the liberal left is incorrect to say Constitutionalists have lost the culture war. The Judicial Crisis Network said Monday night it is launching "Confirm Kavanaugh" - a $1.4 million ad buy on national cable and digital platforms in Alabama as well as Indiana, North Dakota and West Virginia.

But Trump's pick, whoever he or she may be, must survive a Senate confirmation before reaching the Supreme Court.

For weeks, JCN has been running a different advertisement in an attempt to cut through Democrat fearmongering. "While I appreciate the invitation from the White House to attend this evening's announcement, I declined so that I can meet first with the nominee in a setting where we can discuss his or her experience and perspectives", he said in a statement, adding that he will be examining the nominee's record and qualifications over the coming days.

The White House reassigned key communications staff last week to focus exclusively on the looming Supreme Court fight. "We believe it's possible to handle this nomination fully by the fall", McConnell (R-Ky.) said at a news conference on Tuesday that was preceded by a meeting with Kavanaugh and Vice President Mike Pence. President George W. Bush first nominated Brett to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on July 25, 2003.

Jon Kyl, a former Arizona Republican senator, has been tasked with shepherding Kavanaugh through the Senate confirmation process. "It's not as though Judge Kavanaugh would be replacing a Justice who was completely and entirely pro-choice, but I think there is reason to suspect that he might be more conservative than Justice Kennedy".

A graduate of Yale and Yale Law, he also was a member of Kenneth Starr's independent counsel team that investigated President Bill Clinton. Plus, he is a former law clerk to Kennedy, who switched sides quite a bit during his time on the Supreme Court. "A judge must interpret the law, not make the law", Kavanaugh said.

Kavanaugh is likely to be more conservative than Justice Kennedy on a range of social issues.

Leaving McConnell's office, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, said no decisions had been made about requesting documents from the White House.

More than anyone else in conservative legal circles today, Kavanaugh, 53, has been viewed as a Supreme Court justice-in-waiting. While Supreme Court justices tend to respect precedents set by previous courts, such as 1973's Roe v. Wade decision, the new court could seriously curtail some rights without fully overturning them.

Top contenders for the role have included federal appeals judges Brett Kavanaugh, Raymond Kethledge, Amy Coney Barrett and Thomas Hardiman. He expressed renewed interest in Hardiman - the runner-up when Trump nominated Gorsuch, said two people with knowledge of his thinking who were not authorized to speak publicly. As a woman and mother, she could upend the narrative pushed by Democrats that Trump's pick would erode women's rights.
