Mr Rowley was left in a critical condition and Dawn Sturgess was killed after they were poisoned by the substance.

The London police anti-terrorism department earlier stated that Sturgess and Rowley came into contact with Novichok - the same nerve agent that poisoned former Colonel of the Main Intelligence Directorate Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia this past March.

Both Skripals have recovered from the poisoning and a police investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Dawn Sturgess, 44, from Amesbury, eight miles north of Salisbury, fell ill on 30 June, and died on Sunday after she was exposed to "a large dose" of the substance, while her partner, Charlie Rowley, remains critically ill in hospital.

Residents in Amesbury and Salisbury are being warned not to pick up "any foreign object which could contain liquid or gel" in a new advisory following the death of Novichok victim Dawn Sturgess.

When asked if Basu was looking for a "needle in a haystack" and he said, "That's why we need witnesses or intelligence", Sky News reports. Britain has blamed Russian Federation for the poisoning of the Skripals, but Russian Federation has denied involvement.

Mr Basu, the Met Police's assistant commissioner for specialist operations, said scientific advice suggested that the nerve agent could remain active for decades.

Belgium’s Courtois blasts France victory as ‘shame for football’
Having a collection of great players individually does not guarantee anything. Olivier Debregeas predicts France will beat Belgium 1-0.

But, he said, Novichok is a rare substance banned by the global community and for there to be two separate and distinct incidents in one small English county is "implausible to say the least".

A police officer stands at a cordon around a public litter bin next to a supported housing project in Salisbury on July 5 after two people were exposed to Novichok nerve agent.

"But the brutal reality is that I can not offer you any reassurance or guarantee at this time".

The BBC understands Mr Rowley's flat is regarded as the key location in the search, but Mr Basu added: "The brutal fact is we don't know where they found it".

"It was subsequently taken to DSTL and following further scientific advice, the investigation team also carried out forensic enquiries on the bus as they look to establish the point at which Dawn and Charlie were contaminated with the nerve agent".

Ms Sturgess has since died in hospital.

He said no one else in the Amesbury and Salisbury region, where the couple lived in southwestern England, has shown any sign of Novichok poisoning.
