Croatia sneaked into the last four through the shootout route where Smolov missed and so did Mario Fernandes, the naturalised Brazilian who brought Russian Federation back into the match in the 114thminute of extra-time.

Denis Cheryshev marked his return to the starting line-up with yet another contender for goal of the tournament after his stunning efforts against Saudi Arabia and Egypt in the group stage, but his first-half opener was cancelled out by Andrej Kramaric just eight minutes later.

Fisht Stadium has already witnessed some of the most intense and spectacular action of Russian Federation 2018, and the local fans will be hoping to bid a fond farewell to the venue by seeing the hosts advance to the semifinals. Croatia began warming up its backup goalkeepers in case Subasic was unable to continue into extra time.

The victor of this game will face England in the semi-final on Wednesday.

Russian Federation and Croatia have faced each other three times previously, with two of those ending goalless in qualifiers for Euro 2008; Croatia won the other meeting in November 2015, a 3-1 victory in a friendly. The Villareal midfielder evaded Modric's challenge and struck a swerving shot from 30 yards which 'keeper, Subasic watched all the way into the top corner from Russia's first shot of the match.

While the hosts went a goal up after 14 minutes through Fyodor Smolov, a pair of quickfire goals from Nikola Kalinić and Marcelo Brozović would push Croatia into the lead after 60 minutes.

Croatia continued to dominate possession in Russia's half, though the hosts had a rare chance in the 72nd minute as Aleksandr Yerokhin found space in the box but sent his header over the bar. However, Andrej Kramarić equalized the scoreline with a header from Mario Mandžukić's assist in the 39th minute.

Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic and Ivan Perisic add star quality to the Croatia lineup, while Dejan Lovren and Domagoj Vida keep their places at centre-back.

Yuri Gazinskiy became Russia's third substitutes, coming in for Dzyuba, but Croatia almost ran into trouble after making two more subs, Josip Pivaric and Mateo Kovacic on for Ivan Strinic and Kramaric.

The game stayed locked at 1-1 through the final whistle, prompting two periods of extra time.

Akinfeev was helpless as Vida's header sneaked through a body of players into the bottom-right corner of the net from a corner on the right. Akinfeev came up strong by blocking a shot from Croatia's Mateo Kovacic on the next attempt.

Mario Fernandes's heroics were ultimately for naught, but at the time they lifted the World Cup host nation from the brink of elimination.

The subsequent shoot-out then saw Subasic and Akinfeev make a save each before Fernandes' miss, which allowed Rakitic to send Croatia through.
