Mr Johnson's almost two years as foreign secretary was not without controversy, with the ambitious Tory heavyweight having been accused of undermining Mrs May on more than one occasion - and making headlines for other reasons.

However, Mr Davis has said that he is not seeking to trigger a coup to remove the Prime Minister, and Downing Street insiders indicated that he was seen as doing "the honourable thing" in light of Mrs May's announcement that the doctrine of strict collective responsibility was being reimposed on Brexit.

Asked if she could survive, he replied: "Oh yes, of course".

- Why wouldn't they want to challenge Mrs May?

Listen to Theresa May's impassioned address to Parliament today - promising a return to United Kingdom sovereignty after Brexit, yet simultaneously keeping close ties to Europe (no country with an EU association agreement has so far avoided signing up to binding relations), with frictionless trade and a close customs relationship that is not a customs union (honest), while remaining free to strike the UK's own trade deals.

"It's regrettable it hasn't been resolved yet, I think there should be less hype and over spinning and let's focus on detailed negotiations".

Mr Davis said he did not want others to follow him out of Government but added it was a "decision of conscience" that must be made "in their own minds".

Asked Tuesday whether May should be replaced as prime minister, Trump said it was "up to the people, not up to me."I get along with her very well, I have a very good relationship", he said".

Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen is the first Tory reported to have submitted a letter declaring no confidence in Theresa May.

Mr Rees-Mogg urged the PM to drop the plan agreed at Chequers.

Addressing Parliament on Monday, May told MPs that she and the two ministers were at odds over "the best way of delivering our shared commitment to honoring the result of the referendum".

Former Foreign Secretary Mr Johnson claimed his Brexit dream "is dying" in his scathing resignation letter. A fracturing of unity at the top of the party could test the loyalty of rank-and-file MPs, many of whom have spent the weekend listening to complaints of betrayal from pro-Brexit constituents. "He's been very, very nice to me, very supportive".

Carolyn Fairbairn, director-general of the CBI, said there had been "real rays of light" in the Cabinet agreement on Friday and described the resignation as a "blow".

After the cabinet meeting, May tweeted that she was "looking ahead to a busy week".

A source close to Mr Johnson told FactCheck: "Boris called for change more than a year before European Union measures came into force".

"What Theresa May was trying to do with her proposal last week was to come up with a compromise that would keep all sides on ball within the Conservative party, and clearly that has failed", Clark said.

"This is the right Brexit", she said.

Brexiteer Cabinet minister Michael Gove admitted the Chequers' plan was not everything he had hoped for, but he was a "realist" and the Prime Minister's lack of a Commons majority meant the "Parliamentary arithmetic" was a factor in deciding what could be adopted.

She took a step closer to the brink over the past 48 hours with the help of Boris Johnson and a Brexit song he could not sing.

Brexit negotiations with Brussels are also expected to resume next Monday.

At a meeting with Conservative lawmakers on Monday, she was cheered and applauded by many, having warned them that internal squabbling could pave the way for socialist opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn to take power instead.

Davis's sudden resignation on Sunday evening was much debated and discussed on Twitter the following morning.
