Major supermarkets have pulled a range of frozen corn, peas, carrots and mixed vegies from shelves after a listeria outbreak in Europe killed nine people and left dozens ill.

The notice on the Food Standards Agency states that although the bacteria can be killed through cooking, sweetcorn can be eaten raw and could be a potential threat.

Australia has become caught up in a European food scare, with supermarkets across the country recalling bags of frozen vegetables over fears they may contain a deadly bacteria.

Waitrose and Spinneys both pulled Waitrose Essential mixed vegetable bags from its freezers on Monday following a mass recall in the United Kingdom involving six supermarkets.

The products have been available for sale at Woolworths, ALDI and IGA, Campbells and independent grocery stores.

Early symptoms include a fever, headache, tiredness and aches and pains.

Blow by blow: France vs Belgium

Customers who have purchased the products are urged to return the product to their local store for a full refund.

According to the European Food Safety Authority, the outbreak has been ongoing since 2015 and has also affected Austria, Denmark, Finland, Sweden.

A New Zealand Countdown spokesperson said in a statement it was aware of one product it stocked, Bell Farms Steam Veggies Carrot, Corn and Broccoli 3pk 450g, which was at risk.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) released the list of the products which included snap frozen vegetable mixes, corn kernels, quick-steam carrot, broccoli and cauliflower mixes and pea, carrot and sweet corn mixed.

Yes, even the Waitrose Essential Supersweet Sweetcorn is not immune from being called back in, with this outbreak revealing that the expensive variety is therefore bagged up in the same factory that produces Lidl Frozen Green Grocer Supersweet Corn, also recalled.
