The Palestinian group Hamas has condemned an Israeli decision to seal off the Karam Abu Salem commercial border crossing, the primary passageway that transfers necessities to residents of the besieged Gaza Strip.

Translation: In addition (to closing the crossing), the extension of the Gaza Strip fishing zone to nine miles for the fishing season will expire, returning today to six miles.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the decision to shut down the border was taken in coordination with the country's defence minister.

The Israeli government also made a decision to reduce the area allowed for fishing in the sea of Gaza from nine nautical miles to six nautical miles, according to the Israeli media.

The flaming kites have set fires to forest and farmland, and have done some damage, though inflicted few casualties.

Thirty-three fires broke out on Sunday in forests and agricultural areas in Israeli communities surrounding the Gaza Strip borders, by incendiary kites and balloons.

On May 29, another vessel from the Gaza Strip, called Al-Hurriyah (Liberty), attempted to run the blockade.

Human rights groups have accused Israeli troops of using excessive force. Almost half of the deaths occurred amid intense violence on May 14, when the United States moved its embassy to Israel from Tel Aviv to the disputed city of Jerusalem.

Following the Palestinian power struggle, Israel imposed a stringent siege on Gaza in 2007 - supported by Egypt under President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi - restricting the movement of people and civilians in and out of the coastal territory, and installing land and sea "buffer zones" in Gaza. "Therefore, Hamas calls on the global community to act immediately and prevent this crime and its risky consequences".

At least 135 people have been killed by Israeli gunfire during the popular demonstrations - dubbed the Great March of Return - that have been taking place along the fence with Israel.
