New Intel Prompts U.S. Government To Reopen Emmett Till Investigation

The US Justice Department announced on Thursday that it was reopening the 1955 murder case of Emmett Till.

The Justice Department told Congress in a report in March that it is reinvestigating Till's slaying in Money, Mississippi, in 1955 after receiving "new information". The reopening of her son's murder case comes 15 years too late for Mamie Till - who became active in the civil-rights movement following his death - she died in 2003.

The federal report is sent annually to lawmakers under legislation bearing Till's name, and this year's report does not describe the new information that triggered the additional investigation.

Tyson's 2017 book "The Blood of Emmett Till" quotes a white woman, Carolyn Donham, as saying during a 2008 interview that she wasn't truthful when she testified that the black teen grabbed her, whistled and made sexual advances at a MS store six decades ago.

Four days later, on August 28, 1955, Roy Bryant and his half-brother, J.W. Milam, rousted Emmett from his bed in the middle of the night, ordered him into the bed of a pickup and eventually beat him viciously before shooting him in the head.

CHANG: The two white men who were tried in 1955 for Till's murder were acquitted, and both of them are now dead.

Mississippi District Attorney Dewayne Richardson, whose circuit oversees the community in which Emmett was abducted, offered his opinion on the development. Against advice, she demanded that his funeral be open casket. Deliberations barely took an hour, and one juror claimed the acquittal could've come sooner had they not stopped to have a soda.

Duke University researcher Timothy B. Tyson released the book, "The Blood of Emmett Till", in early 2017.

Donham, who will be 84 this month, now lives in Raleigh, N.C. and declined comment to the AP.

Deborah Watts, cousin of Emmett Till, says all the family has ever wanted was justice and hope for a better tomorrow. In 2007, at the age of 72, she granted an interview to Tyson, who was conducting research for The Blood of Emmett Till.

Images of his mutilated body gave witness to the depth of racial hatred in the Deep South and inspired civil rights campaigns.

Though the Justice Department has reopened its investigation-possibly due to Donham's comments to Tyson-it is not yet known if prosecutors will bring a new case against anyone connected to the murder. The two men have since died, in 1994 and 1981, respectively.

Tyson said the Federal Bureau of Investigation interviewed him a year ago, and he turned over all research materials, including a memoir Donham wrote that he said would not be published until after her death. Bryant said she pulled away, and moments later the young man "caught me at the cash register", grasping her around the waist with both hands and pulling her toward him. "He said [he had] done something with white women before", she said.

Though a judge ruled Carolyn's testimony inadmissible in court, her husband and Milam were quickly acquitted. I don't know what's - we don't know.
