Chicago police release bodycam footage of Harith Augustus

Protests, clashes after Chicago man is killed by police Chicago police: Man killed by police appeared to be armed

They say it shows the man had a handgun in his waistband he was reaching for. The officer involved will be placed on desk duty while the incident is investigated.

It was not fully clear why officers initially approached Mr Augustus.

An officer points to Mr Augustus' waist and he backs away.

The decision to release the video so soon was taken to avoid further violence, police said.

"The footage pauses and zooms in on the weapon". He then runs away and into the street as a police SUV drives up. They said it was all captured on police body camera and a spokesman for Chicago police said that the body camera footage will be released Sunday.

Police released the video earlier than normal "to dispel inaccurate information", Guglielmi said on Twitter.

"Several arrests were made", Waller said. Eddie Johnson regarding the fatal police-involved shooting for 3:15 p.m. Sunday.

Johnson said the officer who shot Augustus has been on the force for about two years.

Medical examiners said Mr Augustus died of multiple gunshot wounds.

A violent clash broke out Saturday in Chicago's predominantly black South Side neighborhood after police shot and killed a man whom they believe was armed.

Gloria Rainge, who lives in the area, told the Chicago Sun-Times Mr Augustus - known in the Grand Crossing neighbourhood as "Snoop" - worked at a barbershop and had a five-year-old daughter.

For hours after the shooting, people remained on the street and yelled at police. The city erupted in protest in 2015 after the release of a video showing white police officer Jason Van Dyke shooting black 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times in 2014. Police recovered a weapon at the scene, but the slain man did not fire his gun at officers.

While the bodycam footage appears to show Waller reaching for his holstered weapon, neighbors told local media that he was a responsible gun owner who had a hide carry license.

Four people were arrested and several officers had minor cuts.

"When they approached him, he tried to push their hands away", Patrol Chief Fred Waller told reporters.

Police say some protesters were throwing rocks, bottles and jumping on police cars. He said the gun and the magazines had been sent for testing. This is the latest event to expose the mistrust between police and local residents in black communities in Chicago.

Officials said three or four officers suffered minor injuries and one patrol auto was damaged, and four protestors were arrested.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was killed after a search for him ended with him barricading himself inside of a home, according to authorities.
