In a survival story fit for Hollywood, a woman has been found alive a week after she plunged off a California cliff in her jeep.

Her disappearance had captured widespread attention in the area.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office handed the investigation off to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office on Thursday after surveillance video from a business showed Hernandez traveling south on Highway 1 into Monterey County.

Monterey County Sheriff's Office spokesman John Thornburg said: "It's usually the fall that gets them, or the ocean that gets them, and she was lucky to survive both".

Angela Hernandez, from OR, was found by hikers on Friday evening after they saw the wreckage of her SUV partially submerged at the bottom of a 200ft (61m) cliff in the Big Sur area.

Family members said she had been driving from Portland to her sister's home in Lancaster in Southern California.

Angela Hernandez was rescued from the side of a cliff off Highway 1. Law enforcement agencies began looking for Hernandez on July 6, when her family reported that she'd stopped communicating with them.

They said Hernandez seemed OK and responsive, and they got help right away.

Hernandez had spoken to her sister from Half Moon Bay, where she had spent the night, on the morning of July 6 before setting off on the final leg of her journey, according to San Francisco ABC station KGO.

An Oregon woman has a spectacular story of survival to tell after she crashed her Jeep off a cliff and survived for a week before being discovered by hikers on Friday.
