In one of her most challenging days as a PM, the Tory leader on Thursday night just narrowly managed to scrape through a crunch parliamentary vote on her customs plan - which would see the United Kingdom leaving the EU customs union.

The government fended off the bid to force her hand in negotiations with Brussels by just six votes - with a handful of Labour Brexiteers saving her from disaster.

The hardline amendments also foresee the United Kingdom having a different Value-Added Tax system from the European Union, and would make any special arrangements for Northern Ireland illegal by excluding the establishment of a customs border in the Irish sea.

"It's nothing more than a shameless attempt to evade scrutiny by a government in absolute disarray", said opposition lawmaker Matthew Pennycook, a member of the Labour Party's Brexit policy team.

Mr Johnson's statement will come on what will already be another tough and challenging day for the prime minister in a turbulent week.

Defeat would likely have made a confidence vote in the government inevitable.

Speaking about the EU's free trade agreement with Japan, he said: "By taking some of the decisions that we might be doing to leave a customs union, we are putting at risk the stability, the frictionless trade capacity that we have with the EU, but also now with that wider part of the world".

Sterling's steep losses came after the government suffered an unexpected defeat on a separate amendment, which means the United Kingdom will now be required to secure an agreement that allows Britain to have continued participation in the European medicines regulatory framework.

Labour Brexiteers Frank Field, Kate Hoey, John Mann and Graham Stringer - along with independent Kelvin Hopkins - voted with the Government.

The proposers of "New Clause 37" - an amendment to the Customs Bill - argued that it would prevent a border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.

The Conservative rebels were the long-time pro-EU MP Ken Clarke, Heidi Allen, Guto Bebb, Richard Benyon, Jonathan Djanogly, Dominic Grieve, Stephen Hammond, Philip Lee, Nicky Morgan, Robert Neill, Mark Pawsey, Antoinette Sandbach, Anna Soubry and Sarah Wollaston.

If parliament does finish for summer earlier than expected, there will not be enough time for Tory MPs to hold a no confidence vote against the PM.

"It's up now to the European Union 27 to determine what sort of relationship they have with us".

The Commons voted by 307 to 301 against the amendment from pro-EU Tory rebels that would have wrecked the Prime Minister's Brexit strategy and plunged the government into chaos.

Carwyn Jones said an agreement could be reached by "stepping over" red lines.

"Very significant defeat of govt tonight on European medicines regulation amendment".

Brexit secretary David Davis and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson resigned last week over the deal, which they said is too soft.
