White House insists Trump believes Russia still a threat

Bill Browder was not surprised Vladimir Putin called him out by name at Monday's press conference with Donald Trump in Helsinki.

Trump's endorsement of the Russian President over his own intelligence services and his failure to confront Putin on key issues such as Crimea and the Novichok poisonings in the United Kingdom signaled to many that he was giving Putin carte blanche to do what he wants.

"I have no doubt that when it comes to American interest, this president is always going to put America first", he said.

The ex-intelligence chiefs and others criticized Trump for appearing to dismiss the USA intelligence community's conclusion that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 election.

"No", Trump said, going on to say he had been tough on Russian Federation - which he said the news media consistently failed to report.

On Tuesday, he said this: "The sentence should have been "I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be" Russian Federation".

The Trump administration, she said, is trying a new approach on its relationship with Russian Federation. But in return, Putin said he would expect the USA to allow Russian investigators to question what he called fugitives on American soil.

In another tweet he is charging the media with preferring to go to war instead of him having a good relationship with Putin.

The first full-fledged talks between the presidents of Russian Federation and the United States took place in Finland's capital of Helsinki on Monday. She said Trump was answering "no" to reporters' requests to ask questions - not to whether he believes Russian Federation is still targeting the United States.

But Mrs Sanders rejected that interpretation later in a news briefing, telling reporters the White House was taking action to prevent any future meddling. He also attacked his Democratic opponents and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and said he held both countries accountable for their state of relations.

Trump said he had been "very strong on the fact that we can't have meddling, we can't have any of that".

Trump said yes, although he apparently stopped short of actually blaming Putin for personally ordering an influence op, the way his opponents tend to. "He recognises the fact that 90 per cent of the world's nuclear weapons are under the direction of the United States and Russian Federation", she said.

Slate called Trump's Tuesday walkback "only a little less disgraceful" than Helsinki, under the headline: "Nothing Trump Says Can Be Trusted". Putin and I discussed many important subjects at our earlier meeting.

Democrats say the woman who translated for Trump - and the notes she likely took - could provide critical information about the meeting.

It also named other former USA officials, including someone it described as a former intelligence officer, Russia's state-operated RIA news agency reported.

The July issue's cover comes after the two leaders' controversial summit in Helsinki, Finland earlier this week.

The White House has declined to rule out accepting a Russian proposal for the questioning in the United States of Americans, including former USA ambassador to Moscow Michael McFaul, sought by the Kremlin for "illegal activities". And he seemed to endorse a plan Putin proposed that would allow special counsel Robert Mueller's team to work with Russian investigators to question 12 Russians indicted last week by Mueller.
