A day after his meeting with Putin, Trump "clarified" his statements at a press conference saying he had full faith in the conclusion of USA intelligence agencies that Russian Federation interfered with the 2016 United States election.

The coveted invitation to Washington was sure to be seen as a victory by Putin, whose last official visit to the United States was in July 2007, when he spent two days at the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine.

"When you attack North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, I feel like I'm being attacked", Colbert continued, before brutally summing up why he believed Putin was only pretending to be the US president's pal. The president later told CBS that he holds Putin responsible for the election interference.

In comments on Twitter early Thursday, President Trump faulted his critics, saying he believes they "badly want to see a major confrontation with Russian Federation, even a confrontation that could lead to war". Putin proposed that U.S. authorities reciprocate and interrogate particular American citizens whom the Kremlin suspects of having engaged in illegal activities in Russian Federation.

On Thursday, Sanders said in a statement that Trump disagreed with the proposal.

The Democrats' letter includes a list of 13 questions "critical to USA national security" the senators want answered to show that Trump still holds "America's interests first". Trump said in a pair of tweets earlier in the day.

"The Summit with Russian Federation was a great success, except with the real enemy of the people, the Fake News Media", he tweeted.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday of the proposed Russian questioning, "That's not going to happen".

Among those Russian Federation was seeking to question was former USA ambassador to Moscow Michael McFaul.

US federal prosecutors accused Maria Butina this week of being a covert Russian agent and working to infiltrate USA political organizations, including the National Rifle Association, before and after Donald Trump's election as president.

"I mean I had these - some of these fools from the media saying, 'Why didn't you stand there, look him in the face, walk over to him, and start shouting at him?' I said, 'Are these people insane?" He said he wished Trump hadn't met alone with the Russian leader-and hadn't questioned intelligence agencies' conclusions on Russian election interference. "So certainly as the leader of a country you would have to hold him responsible, yes", Mr. Trump said.

Trump asserted Wednesday at the White House that no other American president has been as tough on Russian Federation.

During a conference at the Aspen Security Forum, the National Intelligence Director was interrupted to be informed of some breaking news coming from the White House Twitter account. Standing alongside Putin, Trump called the idea "an incredible offer".

Mr Trump tweeted on Thursday that his critics in the media "are pushing so recklessly hard and hate the fact that I'll probably have a good relationship with Putin". "We are ready for discussions on this subject".

In a television interview taped on Thursday, Trump said that he and Putin, who US intelligence agencies say directed interference to sway the 2016 vote toward Trump, had a rapport during their meeting in Helsinki.
