Google's introduction of Security Keys for its staff killed employee phishing

Google’s 89,000+ employees have had zero phishing incidents since switching to hardware security keys in 2017 Google Proves That Hardware Security Keys Are The Way To Go

Instead, the key plugs directly into an employee's work machine via USB-A or USB-C port, with the worker then tapping a button on the key to sign in. "We have had no reported or confirmed account takeovers since implementing security keys at Google", explained the spokesperson. It works like this: Any computer that attempts to log in will need both the password and the physical key. And it's all due to a $20 gadget called a security key, which Google requires its employees use.

The technology giant has said that using physical Security Keys has helped it nearly entirely eradicate phishing attacks targeting its workers.

Once a device is enrolled for a specific Web site that supports Security Keys, the user no longer needs to enter their password at that site (unless they try to access the same account from a different device, in which case it will ask the user to insert their key). Other hackers have managed to crack two-factor authentication by spying over a cellular network and intercepting the SMS messages loaded with the special codes.

The low-priced items do away with the need for passwords or one-time codes sent by SMS, which have been previously hijacked to attack organisations around the world, with a different way of ensuring two-factor authentication (2FA).

Naked Security has discussed U2F tokens before, the basic principle of which is that users must authenticate themselves to their account using a username, a password, but also by plugging in a token that is individual to each user. Google has worked with various industry groups, such as the FIDO Alliance, to develop security key technology called U2F.

Demi Lovato Reportedly In Hospital After Suffering Heroin Overdose
Her condition is not known at this time. "Our thoughts go out to Demi and her family", the statement read. Demi had been struggling with substance abuse , having lived in a sober living home at one point.

Your company may already require you to have two-factor authentication turned on.

More platforms like Dropbox, Facebook and Github are now using U2F which is an emerging open source authentication standard. Password managers are supporting U2F as well including Dashlane, Keepass, LastPass, and Duo Security. It's supported by browsers including Chrome, Firefox and Opera. However, Firefox and Quantum don't enable U2F by default.

Software giants Microsoft and Apple have yet to roll out support for U2F browsers, but Microsoft said its upcoming Edge browser will support U2F later this year, according to the KrebsOnSecurity report.

Google has revealed its way of cutting out phishing attacks completely.

While we're on the subject of multi-factor authentication, I should note that Google now offers an extra set of security measures for all of its properties called Advanced Protection.
