Hussain lived with his parents in the building, and neighbors said the family was Pakistani.

There is no evidence Hussain had a criminal record and, according to Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale, he was not on a federal watch list.

An 18-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl were killed in the rampage, and 13 people were wounded.

There was no immediate explanation for the knife attack and police were also seeking a motive for Hussain's overnight shooting spree in Toronto.

The psychiatric association says it condemns Hussain's actions, but believes discussing them in the context of his depression risks stigmatizing people with psychiatric disorders. His neighbors and friends described him as quiet but mild-mannered and always polite. "I can't put two and two together".

"I feel bad right now because I wish I had the ability to identify what triggered this sort of behavior, but I don't", Sukhera said.

Police executed a search warrant Monday and were set to hunt for what they were told could be a stockpile of weapons and perhaps explosives.

Sources say police in Toronto and CSIS officials in Ottawa, as well as the RCMP, are looking into his past, which sources say include his residence in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"I asked him, 'What do you want to do?"

Toronto has been rattled by a string of violent incidents this year.

Doug Ford hugs a man at the start of the march. "Gun violence in any part of our city is terrible and completely unacceptable".

It was not his first salvo of shots, nor the last, that night. The two young girls survived, partly thanks to neighbours who used napkins to stem the bleeding.

Gun control advocates already have their way in Canada, where citizens have been virtually disarmed. That's a 71 per cent increase in the number of fatal shootings compared to this time past year.

Meanwhile, the Toronto neighbourhood shattered by the shooting began showing signs of recovery with customers flocking back to businesses that opened their doors Tuesday, vowing not to let the attack days earlier change their impressions of the lively community.

The deadly melee in the popular Toronto neighborhood has led to increased scrutiny of the city's gun violence.

March and others have long lobbied the city's mayor to do more, arguing that the violence in the city disproportionately affects certain neighbourhoods. "Now all of a sudden it spills into what we call "previously- thought safe spaces" and now he's acting".

But while many in the apartment complex reported seeing the 29-year-old happy and smiling, that outward cheer hid a dark secret.

"There are questions that remain unanswered-like which mosque Hussain attended, who scrubbed his social media presence and how it was that his name was withheld until the family issued their polished statement", Fateh concluded, referring to accusations that the Hussain family statement quoted above was prepared with the help of professional Muslim activists. We have seen what happened in United Kingdom and Europe with vehicle ramming and gun attacks.

Gun violence is nearly unheard of in the area and in Toronto. See them all below.
