Here's How to Stream the Blood Moon

When and where to watch the Blood Moon in Sweden When and where to watch the Blood Moon in Sweden

Although total lunar eclipses happen relatively often, the one happening on Friday 27 July 2018 is particularly special because it will last for the longest time of any such eclipse in the 21st century.

Interestingly, some people feel that the longest lunar eclipse has its own disadvantages. It's been working its way toward the closest it's been to Earth in about 15 years.

People across the country -weather permitting - will be able to view a rare celestial event called a selenelion this morning.

The full eclipse will begin at approximately 9:13 p.m. UTC, which is just 5:13 p.m. EST, making it impossible to see from anywhere in the United States, Canada, Central America, or Greenland. The moon will rise and be eclipsed by the Earth and about 30 minutes later, Mars will also rise, looking brighter than ever before.

"It will be the century's longest total lunar eclipse with a whopping one hour and 43 minutes in totality".

On July 27 at around 10pm, the red planet Mars will be directly opposite to the Sun and at the same time being at closest distance from the Earth at about 56 million kilometres.

Unlike a solar eclipse, the lunar event can be viewed without wearing protective eye gear.

"There is no reason to believe that blood moons foretell doom", said Massey.

Mars will add to the spectacle shining brightly below the blood moon as it reaches perihelic opposition - where the Red Planet and the sun are on directly opposite sides of Earth.

The moon travels to a similar position every month, but the tilt of its orbit means it normally passes above or below the Earth's shadow - so most months we have a full moon without an eclipse. The eclipse is estimated to start in India at 11:44pm IST on Friday night and the total lunar eclipse 2018 is expected to begin at 1am IST.

The next lunar eclipse visible in Brunei will take place on July 17 next year, but it will be a partial one.

According to a research, the temperature on the moon varies so much that it changes from dramatic hot to freezing cold in a couple of hours. It happens because, when the sunlight enters Earth's atmosphere which is blocking, the light gets refracted in such a way that the green to violet wavelengths on the visible spectrum scatter more strongly than the red, thus giving the moon a reddish cast.

The next lunar eclipse will be seen on December 31, 2028.

Only those in the Eastern Hemisphere will be able to view the upcoming event, with people in Europe, Africa and Asia getting the best seats for the lunar show.
