EPA Proposes To Freeze Fuel Economy Standards At 37 MPG

Trump in March 2017 announced his administration would be reopening a review of the Obama automobile rules that he and some automakers said was unfairly cut short by Obama's EPA.

Becerra and attorneys general from 16 other states sued in May to stop the EPA from scrapping standards that would have required vehicles by 2025 to achieve 36 miles per gallon (58 kilometers per gallon) in real-world driving, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) over the existing standards.

The Natural Resources Council of ME said the changes will result in more harmful pollutants drifting into ME - which already has among the nation's highest asthma rates - and "adds insult to injury by also eliminating states' rights to set our own clean auto standards".

The Trump administration also said on Thursday that it will propose to rescind California's unique authority to set its own fuel economy standards and that the EPA and DOT hope to set one national gas mileage and emissions standard for the entire nation. Get the full story in the video above. "Kicking California bullies out of the fuel economy playground will expand consumer choice, while making new cars more affordable". Consumers Union, the advocacy division of Consumer Reports, said consumers could save between $3,200 per auto and $4,800 per truck over the life of the vehicle under that standard, and that they would save even more if gas prices go up. As EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler explained, "Our proposal aims to strike the right regulatory balance based on the most recent information and create a 50-state solution that will enable more Americans to afford newer, safer vehicles that pollute less".

The US government on Thursday proposed weakening fuel efficiency requirements for cars and trucks, referred to as the clean vehicle rule.

California - which is playing a world-leading role in setting aggressive climate goals and building strong coalitions of partners committed to curbing carbon pollution in both the United States and around the globe - will convene the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco in September.

In Thursday's proposal, the Trump administration argues that its proposed freeze will have a "negligible" impact on air quality, and boost the earth's temperature by 3/1000th of one degree Celsius by 2100.

USA officials have been closely monitoring North Korea's willingness to abandon its nuclear ambitions. Both McKeague and Byrd expressed hope that North Korea would allow the resumption of joint U.S.

The Obama-era rules also drove auto prices higher, since prior estimates fell short of what incremental improvements to fuel efficiency actually cost.

More than a dozen states follow California's standards, amounting to about 40 per cent of the country's new-vehicle market. A final rule is expected this winter. As a result, vehicle prices are soaring.

The prices on new cars have become unaffordable to median-income families in every metropolitan region in the United States except Washington, according to an independent study by Bankrate.com. "It means that the federal government will have slightly less control over the kinds of cars and trucks people can buy".

The greatest increase in greenhouse gas emissions would happen in the 2030s because electric cars will grow significantly by the 2040s, the Energy Innovation analysis found.

Older cars are less fuel efficient and less safe. In their summary of the notice, the administration argues the proposal will prevent "thousands of on-road fatalities and injuries" because it will not force automakers to use lighter materials to improve efficiency. In 1989, aHarvard-Brookings study estimated that the modest 27.5 mile-per-gallon requirement at the time caused a 14 to 27 percent increase in traffic deaths because carmakers downsized vehicles. Why all of the sudden would the Trump administration - without the facts and the science behind them - feel like they can just yank those away?

"Rolling back these successful rules is a serious mistake that will cost consumers dearly".
