PS4 Breaks 80 Million Units Sold

That gain came from the sale of Sony’s camera module unit and the receipt of insurance payouts for earthquake damage PS4 Expected To Have Outsold Lifetime Sales Of PS3 Within Months

Group operating profit rose 23.7 percent to a record 195.01 billion yen, boosted by solid sales of new game titles such as "God of War" for Sony's flagship PlayStation 4 console, the company said.

This is stark contrast to April this year, when the company's Chief Executive Officer Kenichiro Yoshida gave a rather pessimistic forecast for the full year, which sent Sony's shares plunging.

The upward revisions confirm a smooth transfer of the reins at Sony following its return to health after huge losses in recent years.

"The Yoshida team got off to a flying start", said Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at Ace Research Institute. "It has been a smooth power transfer", after Sony's recovery and the company "is forecast to continue displaying a strong performance at quite high levels".

Growth was even sharper, at 61 percent, when excluding the previous year's one-time gain from the sale of Sony's camera module unit and receipt of insurance payouts for quake damage. Nile's 40 percent-held affiliate owns EMI Music Publishing, which will be Sony's wholly owned unit in the future.

The Kyoto-based game giant reported net profit for the three months to June of ¥30.6 billion, with operating profit soaring 88.4 percent to ¥30.5 billion.

As pretty much every person and their dog owns a PlayStation 4 now it comes as no surprise that PS4 software sales were sky high bringing in 472.1 billion yen in this quarter which is up by over a billion yen year-on-year.

Sales of PlayStation 4 products were doing "better than expected" as a result of popular gaming titles, Yasuo Imanaka, an analyst at Rakuten Securities in Tokyo, said before the results were announced.

Sony also noted that 40.6 million games shipped over the April-June period, and digital downloads made up almost half of all games sold, sitting at around 43 percent overall. Unfortunately, Sony hasn't issued an updated figure since then, but the console has likely edged towards the 80 million mark in the six months since.

Sony expects PS4 shipments to total 17 million units by the end of the fiscal year in March 2019.

It kept its profit forecast for the year ending March at 670 billion yen, down 8.8 per cent on year, citing various potential risks including competition in smartphones.
