Coles sets August 29 deadline for handout of free reusable plastic bags

Coles Says It’ll Hand Out Reusable Bags For Free ‘Cos Shoppers Can’t Cope Australian supermarket Coles gives in to customer pressure over plastic bags

Greenpeace have criticised the decision as irresponsible and disappointing, saying that Coles is perpetuating the problem of plastic waste by providing free bags.

The decision has angered environmental groups who have long campaigned for single-use bags to be phased out.

The backflip has prompted renewed calls for a NSW-wide ban on single-use plastic bags.

The retail boss sent an all-staff email empathising with his team that the change from single-use plastic bags "has been a big and hard change for many of our customers".

Supermarket giant Coles has backflipped for the second time in two days - announcing that, once again, free plastic bags will be banned from the checkout.

Now, I'm not advocating violence but what I would advocate is stop being a bunch of compliant saps and when somebody does something stupid, which this unquestionably is, go "it isn't good enough and I'm not going to stop with you until you change your policy".

In Australia, they said, "get stuffed, there is no way I am bringing my bag in and I'm not going to pay 15 cents".

"Coles have caved in far too quickly to a small but vocal minority and there is absolutely no doubt Coles will be punished for this decision by customers who don't want to see plastic bags littering their beaches and killing marine life".

In a statement sent to news.com.au, a spokeswoman for Woolworths said the majority of the chain's customers had "embraced the move to a more sustainable way of shopping", and thanked shoppers for their patience and support.

Thought the bag ban was a deal done in ink?

"This is happening all over the world and Australia needs to step up the game".

From July 1, Queensland and Western Australia joined South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory with state-wide bans.

"We now renew our call to Gladys Berejiklian and the State Government to enforce a ban of single-use plastic bags immediately".

"Also, a public message to Brad Banducci and the team at Woolworths - please don't follow suit". It is also selling plastic-lined cases to store them in.

"It's just messy", chief executive Gayle Sloan said.

"They're back. The bags are back", Steve said with a smirk while waving a plastic bag in his hand on last night's episode of The Project.

"So it's up to all of us to keep the pressure on and tell them we want to stick to their commitment to reduce plastic", she said.
