Europe heatwave: Spain and Portugal struggle in 40C+ temperatures

Spain and Portugal faced another exceptionally hot day Saturday as a heat wave that has killed three people in Spain threatened to raise temperatures to record levels.

High temperatures are being driven higher by a hot air mass moving north from Africa, which is also bringing dust from the Sahara Desert.

The country is on alert to prevent a repeat of its worst fires in history past year when 114 people died.

Sweden's Kebnekaise mountain's southern peak is no longer the tallest in the country after high temperatures caused 13 feet of snow to melt.

"Combined with high pressure in charge, blue skies every day, and the ground already warmed up, that leads to a day-on-day build, combining to give us these intense temperatures", the official said.

A major fire broke out on Friday in Monchique, in Portugal's southern Algarve region, consuming more than 1,000 hectares of eucalyptus forest and forcing evacuations from one village.

Weather experts say Spain's heat will then spread to the United Kingdom, with predictions of 40C in France and "low 30s" in Britain over the weekend.

The long, hot summer has been so consistent that it has put a strain on German breweries, who have sold so much beer that there is a bottle shortage - bouncing back from record low sales previous year.
