Iran acquired five new commercial aircraft on Sunday, a day before the US begins restoring sanctions that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear accord with world powers.

But the government of President Hassan Rouhani also faces opposition from conservatives and religious leaders, who have long opposed his outreach to the West and are keen to leverage anger over corruption to unseat him.

Iran is also said to have started to offer India cargo insurance and tankers operated by Iranian companies as some Indian insurers have refused to cover oil cargoes from Iran in the face of the returning us sanctions on Tehran.

One U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said possibly more than 100 vessels were involved in the drills, including small boats.

The move comes as President Donald Trump has directed US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to consider increasing proposed tariffs on US$200 billion in Chinese goods to 25 per cent from 10 per cent. "That's the behavioural change that we're looking for from the Iranian regime", Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Metro TV in Jakarta.

Purchases from Iran could slow from August as imports from Tehran are getting tougher after the United States in May pulled out of a 2015 nuclear deal and announced the renewal of sanctions against Tehran. US officials last week said Iran carried out a similar exercise, though Tehran did not immediately acknowledge it.

But as the new Indian fiscal year began in April, refiners have been taking more Iranian oil imports compared to the previous fiscal year, as Iran offered incentives such as extended credit periods and nearly free shipping to keep its market share in India-Tehran's second-largest oil customer after China.

The snub could seriously undermine USA efforts to isolate Iran over the country's controversial nuclear programme.

Iran Air said on Saturday it was set to take delivery of five new planes from Franco-Italian firm ATR just before the renewed United States sanctions go into effect.

The Associated Press reported that a shipment of five new ATR72-600 planes arrived in Tehran as part of a deal with a French-Italian manufacturer for 20 aircraft.

The move was condemned by USA allies including the UK, Germany and France.

A third official said the Iranian naval operations did not appear to be affecting commercial maritime activity.

"In November, when oil sales are affected, we will have a clearer view of the impact on daily lives".

"There is a massive loss of confidence in the financial system and the government's ability to control things and withstand sanctions", she said.
