Up to 20 people are feared dead after a World War Two vintage aircraft crashed into a Swiss mountainside.

All 20 people on board were killed, police said Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018.

Police in southeastern Graubuenden canton (state) said a several-seater plane crashed Saturday on the Piz Segnas mountain striking the mountain's western flank about 2,540 meters above sea level.

Deceased passengers include Swiss citizens and a three-person family from Austria, police say.

Police said a large rescue mission had been deployed to the scene of the crash, including five helicopters.

JU-Air said on its website that it was "deeply saddened" and its "thoughts were with the passengers, the crew and families and friends of the victims".

"One can ascertain that the aircraft hit the ground almost vertically at high speed", Daniel Knecht, who heads the aviation division of the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board, said.

The aircraft belongs to JU-Air, a company with links to the Swiss air force, the ATS news agency reported. It has suspended all flights until further notice. Its pilots are ex-military and professional pilots, all of them volunteers.

Earlier on Saturday, a small plane carrying two parents and their two children crashed in the nearby canton of Nidwalden.
