Indra Nooyi of PepsiCo has announced that she is stepping aside as CEO after some 12 years at the helm.

Nooyi will remain the chairman until early 2019 to ensure a smooth transition, the company said.

Nooyi, who is said to get up at 4am, was born in Madras, now Chennai, and left India at the age of 23 to study at Yale, where she earned her master's degree in public and private management.

In a series of posts on Twitter, the businesswoman referred to her upbringing in India and said she "never imagined" she'd have the opportunity to lead a company like PepsiCo. She oversaw the company during a turbulent time in the industry that has forced PepsiCo, Coca-Cola Co., Campbell Soup Co. and Mondelez International Inc.to shake up product portfolios that had been the norm for decades as families seek healthier choices.

Under Nooyi's leadership, PepsiCo's revenue grew more than 80 per cent, outperforming our peers and adding a new billion-dollar brand nearly every other year.
