A week before defending his title at the PGA Championship, Thomas carded three-under-par 67 after starting the day tied for the lead with Englishmen Ian Poulter and Tommy Fleetwood.

"The hard part about this course is you can get off track pretty quick if you're not playing well", Thomas told CBS television.

Tiger Woods, an eight-time victor at Firestone, started 11 shots behind and figured he would go out with a bang by playing aggressively.

Bridgestone is also Tiger's last chance to prepare for the final major of the calendar year: the PGA Championship next weekend in Missouri.

The latter is certainly true, given his good form of late and his fondness for the course.

All he needs to do is ask his good buddy, Jordan Spieth, what it's been like this year.

Magnitude seven quake strikes near Lombok

"It was kind of one of the few things left that I felt I needed to knock off or felt that would have been nice to add to the resume, for sure", Thomas said.

Woods, whose last victory was five years ago when he won this World Golf Championship for a record eighth time, got within four shots of the lead with a tee shot to 2 feet on the par-3 12th hole.

McIlroy finished the back nine with consecutive bogeys and never recovered. Thomas had not finished better than a tie for 28th in his two previous appearances at Firestone. The World Series of Golf began in 1962, and it became an official PGA Tour event in 1976.

Thomas came into this week at Firestone, the last event in this course's history, fifth overall in total strokes gained on the PGA Tour but no worse than 51st in any specific category. In many respects, it was the precursor to the World Golf Championships by bringing in winners from around the world.

As for Firestone, it has been an fantastic run for Woods at the course that will no longer be host for the tournament - it is moving to Memphis next year. It is moving to Memphis, Tennessee, in 2019. Stanley closed with a 68. A birdie at No. 10 put him three shots behind, but that was all he had. He shot 69 for an easy four-stroke victory over fellow American Kyle Stanley, with Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen and Dustin Johnson tied third.

McIlroy was satisfied with a bogey-free round, particularly the quality of his driving, as he smashed his tee shots more than 300 yards with monotonous regularity.

The Holywood man, who won here in 2014 as part of his dominant stretch that also saw him win The Open and US PGA Championship, got off to a strong start after birdieing the second despite a wayward drive which finished on the adjacent third hole, and the four-time Major victor was then nearly hit by a shot from the group in front who were actually playing the par-four.
