Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow nevertheless attempted to rationalize the 2016 meeting as legal in an interview Sunday on ABC's This Week.
President Donald Trump on Sunday acknowledged that the 2016 Trump Tower meeting between a Kremlin-connected lawyer and his son was to collect information about his political opponent, casting new light on a moment central to the special counsel's Russian Federation probe. He added that "as long as the Russians interfere on Donald Trump's side in the midterms, Vladimir Putin can count on the president to never call him out". But more than most people, Trump loves things that have his name on them.
Trump's eldest son confirmed the meeting in June 2016, but claimed the lawyer provided no useful information and eventually turned the subject toward policies on Russian adoption that had been curtailed in response to US sanctions.
However, he subsequently admitted he had agreed to the meeting after being told he would be offered information that would prove detrimental to Mrs Clinton.
One of the president's personal lawyers said on Sunday that if Trump is subpoenaed by the special counsel, his lawyers will attempt to quash it in court. At various times, they defended the meeting by claiming it was exclusively about worldwide adoption, said that they were doing standard opposition research, and even argued that they didn't get anything out of it so how can it be illegal?
Whatever his explanation, Trump has consistently said he didn't know about the Trump Tower meeting. He went on to distance himself from Trump Jr. and the meeting: "I did not know about it!"
Trump Jr.'s testimony to Congress contained a similar defense as his father's Sunday tweet, indicating that he saw no reason not to accept a meeting that could yield important information about Clinton, even though he was told that it was part of an effort by the government of a hostile power.
While originally Trump, a Republican, said the meeting was about adoptions, on Sunday he said on Twitter that it was about getting information on Clinton.
President Donald Trump has been urged to stop tweeting about the 2016 Trump Tower meeting between Trump's top advisers and several Russians, a source familiar with discussions tells CNN.
Why is the Trump Tower meeting controversial?
Just a half hour after Trump's new tweet, Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow admitted that he had put out falsehoods a year ago when he also claimed that the meeting was about adoption.
With the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) maintaining that presidents can't be prosecuted while still in office, conservative columnist Jennifer Rubin said Trump's collusion admission could mean he'll be at risk of jail time after leaving office.
