Celebrated globally by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, WABA, this year's celebrations are held under the theme, "Breastfeeding: Foundation of Life". It contains vital vitamins and nutrients that the baby needs in the initial months after birth.

When babies consume breast milk, they are less likely to develop respiratory illnesses, diabetes, and other diseases.

According to a research by World Health Organization and UNICEF, breastfeeding babies for the first two years would annually save the lives of more than 8,20,000 children under five years of age.

"They also need a breastfeeding plan". He based his summation of the FOAD Hypothesis (Fatal origin of adult disease) which is premised on the fact that environmental factors particularly nutrition, act in early life to program risks for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in adult life.

"Although most people are aware that breastfeeding is beneficial for term babies, many don't know that breast milk is even more important for pre-term and low birth weight babies, as it helps save their lives", says Dr Raghuram Mallaiah, Director, Neonatology, Fortis La Femme, and founder of Amaara Human Milk Bank. Exclusive breastfeeding also helps to bring about bonding of baby and mother and helps delay a new pregnancy.

On the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week 2018, WBW, the Sharjah Baby-Friendly Office, SBFO, is organising a series of interactive sessions and workshops for new mothers and medical personnel to boost awareness about the importance of breastfeeding, and its physical and psychological benefits for mothers and babies.

It has set a national target of 15% in exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. Very low exclusive breastfeeding rate has persisted among mothers in Nigeria with the National rate at 25% in 2014 (National Nutrition and Health Survey, 2014). Many women also fear that breastfeeding wilts their breasts, while research has proved otherwise, thereby busting the myth that breastfeeding leads to drooping of breasts.

"Breastfeeding children within an hour of their birth allows them access to colostrum, the first of breast milk that is rich in antibodies".

After the first feed, babies are to be breastfed on demand that is whenever the baby shows signs of hunger day and night.

Southwest Florida and Lee County Breast Coalition are taking steps to provide more support to mothers who struggle with breastfeeding. During the same period, the rates of early initiation of breastfeeding decreased from 40 per cent to 27 per cent. Above two thirds of these deaths occur because of inappropriate feeding practices to children during the first year of their birth.

Beyond combating marketing of breast milk substitutes, there is need to invest in policies and programmes that support women's breastfeeding.
